Introduction

FairCopy is a word processor based on the TEI Guidelines. The internationally accepted “Guidelines for Electronic Text Encoding and Interchange” or “TEI Guidelines” for short, are a powerful XML schema created for describing all sorts of texts. FairCopy makes it easy to read, transcribe, and encode texts using the TEI Guidelines.

While a typical word processor helps you control the layout and appearance of a text, FairCopy allows you to describe the structure of the text and record everything from the rhyme and meter of a poem, to a shift of handwriting in a manuscript, to linking bibliographic references.

FairCopy is desktop software which runs on your Windows, Mac or Linux computer. Your project files and data are kept on your local computer and you can share these files with other users of FairCopy. You may also export texts into TEI XML for use by other software.

This online manual covers all of the features of FairCopy and how to use them. First, let’s take a look at how to create your first FairCopy project.
